Headquartered in Nova Scotia, Port Hawkesbury Paper (PHP) is the leading producer of supercalendered papers in North America, manufacturing SCA+ and SCA++ products for use in catalogs, magazines and retail inserts, as well as specialty papers.
The company’s paper production capacity includes three thermomechanical (TMP) pulp lines that supply high-quality fiber to the papermaking process. PHP ships its products to customers throughout North America and around the world.

PHP’s environmental commitment includes the management of approximately 523,000 hectares (over 2,000 square miles) of public forestland under a Crown license agreement with the province of Nova Scotia. Since 2001, the company has maintained forest management certification on this land, and is currently certified to the forest management standards of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®; FSC- C023189) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®).
In addition to being certified to the FSC and SFI forest management standards, the company is also independently certified to the chain of custody standards of FSC (FSC-C112699), SFI, and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). These standards ensure that the company meets all requirements for the management of ecological, social and economic forest values. Chain of custody certification also verifies that company paper bearing an FSC, SFI or PEFC label comes from well-managed forests or controlled sources.
Approximately 38% of the thermal energy demand at PHP is generated using renewable bioenergy, and another 53% comes from steam recovered through a heat recovery unit (HCU) system. Port Hawkesbury also continues to take significant steps toward installing a 112-megawatt wind farm, including direct funding for the installation of two meteorological towers on the proposed site. When built, this project will be the largest wind farm in Nova Scotia and supply green power directly to PHP.

PHP employees and former employees recently donated $100,000 to the Strait Richmond Hospital Foundation to support a major renovation project. The gift, which was presented to the Foundation 40 years after a major gift from the company helped open the hospital, enhanced the facility’s emergency department and created a new ambulatory care area.
