John S. Bates Medal to Richard Berry

Eric Ashby, Vice President and Mill Manager of Domtar's Windsor Facility presented the John S. Bates Memorial Gold Medal to Richard Berry, Vice-President, Technology and CTO, CelluForce. Chairman of PAPTAC's Executive Committee, Ashby described the John S. Bates Memorial Gold Medal's significant place in the range of national awards presented at PaperWeek Canada. The medal is PAPTAC's highest individual honour and is awarded to a member of the Association in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the science and technology of the pulp and paper industry.

Richard Berry is a British-Canadian chemist who specializes in the production of nanocellulose. Berry holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry and Geology from Keele University in Staffordshire, England in 1975. In 1980 he received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from McGill University. He is Vice-President, Technology & Chief Technology Officer at the CelluForce and has published more than 100 articles and holds 24 patents. Berry has had numerous scientific accomplishments and profound experience in the industrial application of many discoveries. He also received a plethora of prizes and distinctions including an award from NanoQue?bec for his contribution to the development of Nanocrystalline Cellulose, the 2012 Purvis Memorial Award and numerous pulp and paper industry distinctions.
