The Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) is preparing for a leadership transition as President and CEO Jason Krips plans to leave the organization at the end of 2026 to take up an executive position at the University of Alberta.
Krips has been appointed vice-president (External Relations) at the university for a five-year term beginning January 1, 2027. His responsibilities will include strengthening relationships with governments, communities and key partners, as well as advancing the university’s fundraising and development priorities.
Krips has led AFPA since April 2020, navigating a period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, organizational restructuring, record wildfire activity and mounting trade challenges with the United States. During his tenure, the association strengthened its engagement with policymakers and industry partners while advocating for Alberta’s forest sector and the communities that depend on it.
AFPA Board Chair Dyon Armstrong thanked Krips for his leadership and contributions to the organization, expressing confidence in the association’s team as it prepares for the transition.
Krips will remain in his current position through December and assist the board executive during the recruitment process for his successor. No replacement has yet been announced.
Reflecting on his departure, Krips expressed confidence in the industry’s future.
“I remain tremendously optimistic about the future of Alberta’s forest sector,” he said, highlighting the industry's resilience and capacity for innovation.
Before joining AFPA, Krips spent nearly two decades with the Government of Alberta, including senior leadership positions in economic development and forestry. He holds degrees in commerce and law from the University of Alberta.
Established in 1942, AFPA represents Alberta’s forest products industry, supporting member companies through advocacy, training and resources aimed at strengthening the sector’s long-term competitiveness.
