Fiberdom has appointed Tuomas Mustonen to its Business Development team, adding an experienced materials innovator and entrepreneur to support the company’s commercial growth.

Mustonen brings more than 25 years of experience in materials development, commercialization and business growth. During his career, he has held roles in packaging research and development at what is now Metsä Board, worked in leadership positions at Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre, and co-founded Paptic, a company known for developing fibre-based alternatives to plastic packaging.

According to Fiberdom, Mustonen’s experience spans the entire innovation journey, from research and development through industrial scale-up and market adoption.

In a company statement, Mustonen said he was drawn to Fiberdom by the potential of Duranova®, the company’s proprietary material made from functionalized wood fibres. Developed without synthetic binders, plastic coatings or fossil-based additives, Duranova® is designed to be compatible with existing paper recycling streams while also meeting home-compostability requirements.

Fiberdom said the material is already being used commercially in selected applications, including certified compostable cutlery, and is being evaluated for additional uses where durable, plastic-free alternatives are sought.

The company believes Mustonen’s industry knowledge, commercial experience and network within the fibre-based materials sector will help accelerate business opportunities and partnerships as it continues to expand the market presence of Duranova®.

Fiberdom is a Finnish materials technology company developing high-performance fibre-based alternatives to plastic. Its Duranova® material is produced from functionalized wood fibres and is designed to combine durability, recyclability and compostability while remaining compatible with existing industrial manufacturing processes.
