Pro Carton has appointed Andreas Birmoser, Executive Vice President, Cartonboard at Stora Enso, as its new President, succeeding Michele Bianchi following four years as President of the European cartonboard association.

Birmoser takes on the role as Pro Carton continues its evolution as a unified voice for the fibre-based packaging industry. During Bianchi's presidency, the association underwent significant transformation, including the integration of another European cartonboard organization and the expansion of its mandate in response to an evolving regulatory landscape, notably the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

With more than 20 years of experience in the forest products and cartonboard sectors, Birmoser brings an international leadership background spanning strategy, commercial development and manufacturing operations. In his current role at Stora Enso, he oversees the company's global cartonboard business. He previously served as CEO of Veracel Celulose in Brazil, where he led operational and strategic development initiatives.

"It is a real honour to take on the role of President of Pro Carton, especially at such an important moment for our industry," Birmoser said, pointing to increasing regulatory complexity, economic uncertainty and shifting market expectations as key challenges shaping the sector.

He emphasized the importance of stronger industry collaboration, noting that Pro Carton will continue to support its members while reinforcing its role as a trusted partner for policymakers and stakeholders across Europe. The association aims to promote sustainable progress and support the long-term competitiveness of the folding carton and cartonboard industry.

Horst Bittermann, Director General of Pro Carton, said Birmoser's experience on the association's Board since 2023, combined with his strategic and collaborative approach, positions him well to guide the organization through its next phase.

As President, Birmoser will work closely with the Pro Carton Board to enhance cooperation across the packaging value chain and continue promoting the value of fibre-based packaging. The association also aims to contribute to science- and fact-based policymaking that supports both environmental performance and industrial competitiveness.

Pro Carton is the European association representing carton and cartonboard manufacturers. It promotes fibre-based packaging as an economically and environmentally balanced solution while supporting policies that advance innovation, sustainability and competitiveness.
