TAPPI has announced the appointment of Lawton C. Roberts as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective November 3, 2025.
He will succeed Larry N. Montague, who will retire at the end of the year after nearly two decades of service marked by the organization’s global expansion, strengthened member engagement, and enhanced education and safety programs.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve this incredible community,” said Mr. Montague. “From day one, our focus was on putting members first—literally placing them at the top of our organizational chart. I’ve seen this industry evolve, grow stronger, and come together in ways that continue to inspire me. I’m confident Lawton is the right person to lead TAPPI into its next chapter.”
Currently serving as Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Roberts has been with TAPPI since 2017 and has collaborated with Montague since 2006 in various capacities. His deep knowledge of the association’s mission, operational leadership, and strong industry relationships made him the unanimous choice of TAPPI’s Board of Directors following an extensive search.
“Lawton brings passion, institutional knowledge, and a clear vision for the future,” said Kim Nelson, Chair of the TAPPI Board. “His leadership will ensure continued momentum in serving our members and supporting innovation across the pulp, paper, and packaging value chains.”
Both leaders will work closely through the end of 2025 to ensure a seamless transition.
TAPPI is the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, tissue, packaging, and converting industries.
