Student recognized for biocomposites project supported by FPInnovations

FPInnovations' Transformation and Interfaces Research Group, under the supervision of Wadood Hamad has developed an innovative method for the manufacture of bio-based thermoplastic composites based on wood pulp fibres. Research has shown that these biocomposites have interesting properties, including light weight and significantly improved mechanical performance (tensile, flexural, heat deflection temperature, impact, etc.), and that they have strong potential for applications in the transportation, consumer goods and construction sectors.

A partnership was formed in 2015 with Thetford Mines' Centre de technologie minérale et de plasturgie (CTMP) to combine FPInnovations' scientific expertise with their knowledge of the plastics industry, in addition to getting access to their excellent facility. In order to continue the development of the manufacturing process and to evaluate certain parameters, the partners hired William Grey, a student in the Cégep de Thetford's plasturgy program, who quickly demonstrated his mastery of the field and contributed to the advancement of the project.

William Grey wins great honours at Expo-sciences competitions

On the strength of his knowledge, William set up a project entitled "New Biocomposites", which enabled him to distinguish himself at the three Expo-sciences competitions in which he took part in 2018. After winning the first prize at the local finals for his research work carried out as part of the FPInnovations-CTMP project—than the first Hydro-Québec prize at the regional finals—William won the prize awarded by the Ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l'Électrification des Transports (MTMDET) in the Québec Super Expo-sciences Hydro-Québec finals. In addition, his project was selected from among the 128 projects from 12 regional finals for the international finals to be held in France, May 21-28.

FPInnovations is proud to support the next generation in forest bioproducts project development and research and wishes William all the best!
