Cascades has launched lithoURB, a 100% recycled and recyclable brown paperboard developed for high-end lithographic printing in corrugated and folding carton packaging.
The new grade is designed to combine the natural appearance of recycled brown paperboard with the print quality, mechanical performance and converting efficiency required for premium consumer packaging.
According to Cascades, lithoURB is aimed at food, beverage, produce and consumer goods applications, particularly for brands seeking to highlight recycled content and other environmental attributes through their packaging.
The paperboard is designed for high-end lithographic printing and can be used in corrugated and folding carton packaging. Packaging made with lithoURB can qualify for FSC Mix or FSC 100% Recycled certification. It is also pre-qualified as recyclable under How2Recycle and meets BRCGS food safety requirements, according to Cascades.
Cascades is targeting higher-value packaging applications in which print appearance and converting performance are central considerations, while increasing the use of recycled fibre.
“Cascades lithoURB provides our customers with eco-friendly packaging—a key factor when choosing products in stores,” said Hugues Simon, president and CEO of Cascades. “By meeting market demand for sustainable products, Cascades strives to maintain its position as a leader in sustainability.”
Jean-David Tardif, executive vice-president of Cascades’ Packaging sector, said the new grade adds a premium paper option intended to help customers develop distinctive packaging for the North American market.
The product has already received industry recognition, winning The Shelby Report’s Sustainability in the Food Industry Award. It is also a finalist in two categories of the Retail Council of Canada’s inaugural Retail Sustainability Excellence Awards: Innovative Sustainable Product & Packaging Design and Recycled Content Adoption. Winners are scheduled to be announced on October 28 in Toronto.
Cascades provides packaging, hygiene and recovery solutions across North America. Founded in 1964, the company employs nearly 9,000 people at approximately 60 operating facilities and has longstanding expertise in recycling and fibre-based products.
