Metsä Spring has launched a new series of moulded wood-fibre punnets aimed at fresh fruits, berries, and vegetables, expanding its award-winning Muoto Uncoated Fibre range and targeting the gradual replacement of single-use plastic packaging in Europe.
Developed to align with the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the new Muoto punnets are designed to help fresh-food packers transition toward recyclable, fibre-based alternatives ahead of the regulation’s expected implementation later this decade. Two punnet sizes have been introduced to accommodate different produce types and customer requirements, with market testing scheduled to begin in January 2026.
The punnets are made from renewable wood pulp and are fully recyclable and biodegradable. Muoto’s manufacturing process converts wet pulp directly into three-dimensional packaging without intermediate steps, reducing material handling and contributing to a lower carbon footprint. Despite their lightweight structure, the punnets are designed for durability across packing, transport, and retail display.
According to Metsä Spring, the European fresh-produce sector consumes billions of packaging units annually, with berries alone accounting for a significant share. The company sees fibre punnets as a scalable alternative capable of materially reducing plastic use at volume.
The Muoto platform has already gained industry recognition, including recent Nordic packaging awards, and early pilots with industrial partners have moved several Muoto products onto retail shelves.
Metsä Spring is the innovation and venture development company of Metsä Group, focused on scaling new wood-based, low-carbon solutions that replace fossil-based materials across packaging, textiles, and the broader bioeconomy.
