Paper Advancement

Sappi Europe has introduced Parade Face Edge, a new 80 g/m² semi-gloss paper for self-adhesive labels designed to resist oil and grease penetration both through the label surface and its cut edges.

The one-side-coated facestock combines a grease-resistant fibre base with a coated surface layer. According to Sappi, integrating grease resistance into the paper structure helps address a limitation of conventional surface-treated labels: oil can enter through an exposed cut edge and spread through the sheet, causing staining and affecting legibility and appearance.

The new grade is intended for applications where labels may be exposed to oils or grease during storage, handling or use. Potential markets include edible oils, sauces, dressings, condiments and dairy products, as well as cosmetics, personal-care products, lubricants and technical oils.

Sappi says Parade Face Edge contains no intentionally added PFAS, halogen-based polymers or wax. The company also states that the paper is suitable for direct food contact and for labels on both returnable and non-returnable containers.

The launch comes as the PPWR’s PFAS restrictions for food-contact packaging began applying across the European Union on August 12, 2026. Under Article 5(5), food-contact packaging cannot be placed on the EU market if PFAS concentrations meet or exceed specified thresholds. Sappi positions Parade Face Edge as a paper-based option developed with these requirements in mind.

For printing and converting, the grade features a smooth, calendered semi-gloss surface and is suitable for flexographic, gravure and offset printing. The reverse side is treated for further processing and lamination in self-adhesive label constructions. It is supplied in reels, with FSC Mix Credit and 100% PEFC-certified versions available on request, subject to availability.

Parade Face Edge is the first product in Sappi’s Parade Face portfolio to combine coated surface protection with grease resistance integrated into the fibre base. It builds on the company’s broader work in functional barrier papers for applications requiring resistance to grease, oil, moisture and oxygen.

Sappi is a global producer of woodfibre-based materials, including packaging and speciality papers, graphic papers, pulp and biomaterials. The company operates manufacturing facilities across Europe, North America and South Africa and serves customers in markets including packaging, labels, publishing and industrial applications.
