The European Commission has approved the merger of Smurfit Kappa, an Irish paper-based packaging leader, and WestRock, a US packaging company.

This paves the way for the creation of Smurfit WestRock, a global giant in the industry.

The EU regulators concluded the merger wouldn't significantly impact competition due to the limited overlap in their market presence. This allowed for a streamlined review process.

First announced in September 2023, the merger aims to combine Smurfit Kappa's sustainable practices and innovative solutions with WestRock's diverse packaging offerings. The resulting company, Smurfit WestRock, boasts a projected annual revenue of $34 billion and is expected to be the world's largest paper and packaging company.
