New biomass facility in Alovera backed by €16M investment and PEFC-certified supply chain
Magnon, a subsidiary of the Ence Group, and Spanish brewing giant Mahou San Miguel have begun construction of a new biomass energy plant at Mahou San Miguel’s Alovera facility in Guadalajara. The €16 million project will install two 10 MWt biomass boilers designed to supply 85 GWht of renewable thermal energy annually over the next 15 years.
Once operational, the facility is expected to reduce the Alovera plant’s direct CO₂ emissions by 95%, replacing nearly all use of natural gas, which will be retained only as a backup energy source. The project, slated for completion in the first half of 2026, received a €4 million grant under Spain’s Strategic Project for the Recovery and Economic Transformation (PERTE) program supporting industrial decarbonization.
Magnon will oversee the assembly, commissioning, and operation of the facility, which will generate clean, renewable heat from sustainably sourced biomass. The plant is located at Spain’s largest brewery and one of Europe’s most advanced production centers, known for its focus on Industry 4.0 and energy efficiency.
This partnership builds on Magnon’s growing role in decarbonizing Spanish industry. The company launched its first renewable thermal energy service in 2023 and signed the agreement with Mahou San Miguel in 2024. Three additional biomass heat projects are in the pipeline, expected to begin construction in 2025, with a projected combined output of 130 GWht per year. Magnon is also in talks with ten other industrial clients across Spain.
Strengthening its environmental credentials, Magnon recently obtained PEFC Chain of Custody certification for its biomass operations. Issued by SGS Global Services and valid through 2030, the certification ensures that the company’s biomass sourcing and processing comply with internationally recognized sustainability and traceability standards.
The PEFC certification applies to every stage of Magnon’s biomass supply chain—from forest harvesting and third-party procurement to port storage and export. It guarantees customers verifiable information on the certified content and origin of the biomass while aligning with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards and excluding materials from controversial sources.
Magnon, a subsidiary of the Ence Group, is a leading Spanish company specializing in the generation of renewable energy from biomass. With a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and industrial decarbonization, Magnon supplies clean thermal energy solutions to a growing number of industrial clients across Spain.
