On January 15, Governor Janet Mills announced a $22 million federal grant from the Biden-Harris Administration to bolster Maine's Forest Bioproducts Advanced Manufacturing Tech Hub.
This funding, part of the CHIPS and Science Act, will accelerate Maine's efforts to become a global leader in sustainable forest-based biomaterials, replacing fossil fuel-derived products and supporting industries like housing and packaging.
The Tech Hub, launched in 2023, brings together over 70 partners, including the University of Maine, Sappi, IDEXX, and the Maine Technology Institute. The consortium focuses on developing innovative materials from wood fibers, such as eco-friendly construction materials and biodegradable packaging, while reducing reliance on toxic and non-renewable resources.
"This investment is a game-changer for Maine," said Governor Mills. "It will help our state lead the way in sustainable manufacturing, create jobs, and strengthen our forest products industry for future generations."
The $22 million grant will fund two key initiatives:
-
Bridging technological innovations with commercialization resources to bring forest bioproducts to the global market.
-
Strengthening the innovation pipeline through technical assistance, workforce development, and advanced manufacturing support.
Brian Whitney, President of the Maine Technology Institute, emphasized the significance of the award: "This funding validates Maine's leadership in sustainable innovation and will help us bring cutting-edge products to the world."
The University of Maine, a key partner in the Tech Hub, will leverage its expertise in forest bioproducts research and workforce development to drive the initiative forward. "This award highlights our commitment to innovation and sustainability," said Joan Ferrini-Mundy, President of the University of Maine.
Maine is one of only six Tech Hubs nationwide to receive this funding, underscoring the state's growing reputation as a hub for sustainable manufacturing. The initiative is backed by investors with over $4.25 billion in assets and aims to create economic opportunities while addressing global environmental challenges.
