Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc. (RYAM) and GranBio LLC have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore the development of a small-scale commercial Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) facility at RYAM’s Jesup, Georgia plant.

If the project proceeds, GranBio will lead the initiative, using its proprietary AVAP® technology to convert lignocellulosic biomass into second-generation ethanol, which would be upgraded into SAF for sale to an offtaker. The proposed plant would capitalize on RYAM’s existing infrastructure, including feedstock, utilities, and logistics.

The project is supported by a $100 million grant awarded to GranBio by the U.S. Department of Energy, aimed at accelerating the commercialization of advanced biofuels.

For RYAM, the partnership represents a strategic step toward diversifying its operations into high-growth renewable energy markets. As part of the agreement, RYAM would also receive a license to GranBio’s latest-generation AVAP® and Celer2L™ technologies, enabling the future production of ethanol and sugar at its own facility.

“This MoU aligns with our strategy to unlock new value from our core assets and expand into renewable markets where our infrastructure and technical capabilities create a competitive advantage,” said De Lyle Bloomquist, President and CEO of RYAM.

GranBio’s CEO Luiz Oliveira emphasized the project’s potential impact. “At Jesup, we will leverage our complementary capabilities in the development of a cost-effective, scalable solution for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels,” he said.

Due diligence for the project is expected to conclude later this year, after which both companies will determine next steps. If advanced, the project would mark a significant milestone in the scaling of cellulosic SAF production in North America and a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability.
