Mondi has announced a €120 million investment in a new biomass power plant at its integrated pulp and paper mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia.

The facility, set for completion in 2027, will increase the site’s energy self-sufficiency from 75% to 90% and replace the existing bark boiler.

The project aims to provide a more sustainable and reliable energy supply for both the mill and the surrounding community. Mondi SCP already supplies district heating in Ružomberok, and once the new power plant is operational, it will be able to extend this service without relying on natural gas.

According to the company, the power plant will deliver significant environmental benefits. Emissions of nitrogen oxides are expected to drop by 50%, while particulate matter emissions should decrease by up to 83% compared with the current boiler. The facility will also make use of residual materials from pulp and paper production, cutting landfill waste and boosting the use of renewable energy. All biomass will be sourced from certified forests managed responsibly.

Joachim Grunewald, Managing Director of Mondi SCP, said the project strengthens operational resilience, improves cost competitiveness, and ensures a consistent, high-quality supply for customers.

Funded in part by subsidies from the European Union’s Modernisation Fund, the investment supports Mondi’s MAP2030 sustainability commitments by reducing air emissions and increasing reliance on renewable energy sources.
