Aging U.S. Kraftliner Mills Face Uncertain Future

Georgia-Pacific recently announced the permanent closure of its Cedar Springs Containerboard mill in Georgia, with operations set to cease by the end of 2025.

The company stated that most job positions will be eliminated by August 1, indicating a full shutdown by the date.

The Cedar Springs mill, a significant producer of virgin fiber containerboard with an annual capacity of nearly 1 million tons, is being closed due to its inability to remain competitive in the long term, according to Georgia-Pacific.

This decision appears to be driven by the mill’s aging infrastructure, as it has the highest average technical age among U.S. kraftliner producers. Five other U.S. mills, collectively producing twice as much as Russia, are within five years of Cedar Springs’ technical age, suggesting similar challenges may face other aging facilities in the country.
