First Call for Papers

The Fundamental Research Symposia are among the premier R&D events in the pulp & paper industry, providing a valuable forum and collection of pulp & paper research since 1957. The Symposia are held every four years at the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The eighteenth symposium will be held at Worcester College, Oxford, September 13-17, 2026. The title of the symposium will be, ‘Advances in Pulp and Paper Research, Oxford 2026’ and the programme will include invited perspective papers from experts in the field. 

We are interested in research across all areas of paper science and technology, including pulp & paper manufacture, nanocellulose & cellulosic materials, coating & barriers, printing & converting, and end-use performance & novel applications. Fundamental chemistry, paper physics, and material science, analytical and experimental method development, material and product characterization, experimental investigations and pilot trials, numerical modelling & simulations are all welcome.

We call for you to submit an extended abstract to be assessed for inclusion in the symposium, using the link below. The abstract should be based on thorough, rational, and interesting research and must include a purpose statement, key results, and logical conclusions. The abstracts should be no more than four pages in length, including text, figures, diagrams, and equations.

In addition to oral presentations, a poster session Fundamental Research Communications will be held. Authors interested in consideration for a poster only should indicate this when submitting.

The deadline for submission of extended abstracts is October 15, 2025. Authors will be advised of the outcome of this first stage of the refereeing process by November 30, 2025; those who are successful will be invited to submit full papers by January 31 2026 for the second phase of the refereeing process. The deadline for the final versions of all papers will be May 31, 2026.
