The 57th Pulp and Paper International Congress highlights biofuels and professional development as central to the future of the planted tree sector
The Brazilian Pulp and Paper Technical Association (ABTCP) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 57th Pulp and Paper International Congress — ABTCP 2025, which will take place from October 14 to 16 at the Novotel Center Norte in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. The event welcomes all professionals involved in the planted tree industry value chain.
This year’s program will be guided by the central theme: People and Biofuels: Building the sustainable future of the forest-based industry with renewable energy sources. It will explore key strategic areas expected to drive meaningful transformation across the short, medium, and long term.
“By bringing together professionals, academia, and students from the pulp, paper, and planted forest sectors, our goal is to foster innovation through broad and in-depth knowledge of the forest-based industry,” says Darcio Berni, ABTCP’s Executive Director, emphasizing the significance of this traditional annual event.
ABTCP is organizing the Congress in partnership with the Institute of Forest Research and Studies (IPEF), Puunjalostusinsinöörit ry, Finnish Forest Products Engineers’ Association (PI), and the Ibero-American Network of Pulp and Paper Researchers (RIADICYP) who are collaborating to develop a program aligned with the industry’s current priorities.
Elected president of the ABTCP 2025 Congress, Paulo Silveira — a seasoned professional with nearly four decades of experience in leading pulp and paper companies and currently serving as Industrial Director for Suzano’s Southern Region — underscores the relevance of the event’s dual focus: professional development and the creation of bioeconomy-aligned products.
“We are entering a new investment cycle in the sector that will demand an unprecedented level of training and upskilling. In addition to the valuable contributions ABTCP already makes through its ongoing initiatives, the Congress is a unique opportunity to collaboratively explore solutions. At the same time, breakthroughs in renewable, forest-based products are fueling technological advances closely aligned with carbon capture goals and broader bioeconomy initiatives,” Silveira explains.
Technical papers, case studies, and research aligned with the Congress’s central theme will be organized into key areas of knowledge, including: Pulp, Paper, Recovery and Energy, Forestry, Environment, Industry 5.0, Biorefinery, Nanotechnology, Engineering and Digital Transformation, Occupational Safety, Maintenance, ESG, and Tissue. Confirmed keynote speakers include Maureen Voigtlaender (Suzano), Flávio Hirotaka Mine (Cenibra), Marcelo Cardoso (UFMG), Ageu Silva (Andritz), and Demetrio dos Santos (UFABC).
Another key initiative at ABTCP 2025 is the Packaging Symposium, being developed by partner institutions. “Strengthening our already well-established partnership with RIADICYP, we’re bringing together leading experts from Brazil and abroad to examine the challenges and innovations currently shaping the packaging sector,” says Viviane Nunes, ABTCP’s Head of Education.
Other highlights of this year’s event include the 3rd Women in Industry Forum, another important initiative toward strengthening female leadership and promoting diversity in the planted tree value chain, and the Student Meeting, one of the Congress’s most anticipated events, offering activities focused on training, networking, and connecting young talent with the job market.
