COFI Convention to Address Forestry Challenges in BC

Event News

The BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI) is set to host its annual convention in Prince George from April 2-4, bringing together over 600 delegates, including industry leaders, policymakers, and Indigenous representatives.

The event, themed "Where Do We Stand? Strategies for Competitiveness and Sustainability," will focus on addressing critical challenges facing the province's forestry sector.

Key discussions will revolve around strategies to counter rising U.S. tariffs, global trade uncertainties, and regulatory complexities. Attendees will explore solutions to enhance wood supply, strengthen partnerships with First Nations, and sustain local jobs while positioning British Columbia as a global leader in sustainable forestry.

A highlight of the convention is the release of a benchmarking study by Glen O’Kelly, CEO of O’Kelly Acumen, comparing BC’s forestry performance with leading regions like Sweden and Brazil. The findings aim to provide actionable recommendations for improving competitiveness. Additionally, COFI’s Chief Economist Kurt Niquidet will present an economic outlook for the sector.

Panels will address pressing issues such as wildfire management, trade dynamics with the U.S., and innovative approaches to land-use planning. Prominent speakers include BC Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar, Regional Chief Terry Teegee of the BC Assembly of First Nations, and former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber.
