CelluloTech, a Canadian innovator in green chemistry, has successfully closed a seed funding round to advance the industrial rollout of its patented, solvent-free cellulose treatment.

The investment round was led by Neglected Climate Opportunities, a subsidiary of the Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham Environmental Trust, with additional backing from Meliorate Partners, a sustainability-focused early-stage fund.

The funding will allow CelluloTech to accelerate commercialization of its proprietary cellulose functionalization technology. It offers a recyclable, compostable, and cost-competitive alternative to plastic, PFAS, and other environmentally harmful materials.

CelluloTech’s breakthrough process enhances cellulose, the most abundant organic compound on earth, without the use of solvents. The resulting material is suitable for various sectors including packaging, hygiene, construction, textiles, and paper. It combines durability and barrier protection with environmental performance. The technology aligns with increasing regulatory pressure to eliminate persistent pollutants from supply chains.

“This investment recognizes our long-term vision to decarbonize and detoxify global materials at scale,” said Romain Metivet, CelluloTech’s co-founder and CEO. “We’re proud to work with partners who share our commitment to delivering high-impact innovation.”

Co-founder and Scientific Director Dr. Daniel Samain added, “It’s deeply rewarding to see my discovery move from the lab toward real-world impact.”

Unlike many green alternatives that come at a premium, CelluloTech’s technology offers what it calls a “green discount.” It matches or even lowers costs compared to conventional materials, without compromising on performance. The company believes this shift is key to driving widespread adoption across industries.

Founded in British Columbia, CelluloTech specializes in solvent-free, molecular-level surface treatments for cellulose-based materials. Its green chemistry approach enables scalable, safe, and sustainable alternatives to coatings and plastics. This makes recyclable and compostable materials a viable standard for industry.
