Fibu has secured SEK 4.26 million from Sweden’s Klimatklivet program to expand production of its wood-fiber foam, a bio-based material designed to replace fossil-based plastic foams used in packaging and insulation.

Fibu AB has received SEK 4.26 million in funding from Klimatklivet, administered by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, to support the expansion of its bio-based foam material.

The investment will help the company scale production as it advances the commercialization of its wood-fiber foam material.

A wood fiber alternative to plastic foams

Fibu has developed a foam material made from wood fibers intended to replace fossil-based plastic foams commonly used for cushioning and protective packaging.

The material is also designed for use in insulation, acoustic applications and furniture components. According to the company, its patented production process enables cost-effective manufacturing while supporting the transition toward renewable materials.

Conventional foams such as polyethylene (PE) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) remain widely used in packaging and insulation. However, regulatory pressure and sustainability targets are pushing companies to explore alternatives with lower environmental impact.

Lower emissions and plastic-free composition

The wood-fiber foam developed by Fibu is composed entirely of wood fibers and does not contain plastic or harmful chemicals.

According to a life-cycle analysis conducted by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, the material’s carbon footprint is 60% to 90% lower than that of conventional plastic foams used in similar applications.

The company also says the material is recyclable and biodegradable. Because it is a mono-material made from wood fibers, it can be recycled through existing paper recycling systems.

In addition to its environmental characteristics, the foam is lightweight and designed to provide shock absorption, making it suitable for protective packaging.

Support from Sweden’s climate investment program

Klimatklivet is a Swedish government investment program that supports local projects aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and accelerating the transition toward a climate-neutral economy.

“We are grateful for the support from Klimatklivet and the confidence in our work to develop renewable alternatives to fossil-based materials,” said Majid Madadi. “This milestone strengthens the foundation for the scale-up and capital raising we are currently pursuing.”

The funding is expected to support the next stage of industrial development for the company’s wood-fiber foam material.

Moving toward industrial scale

For packaging producers and materials suppliers, bio-based alternatives to plastic foams are attracting increasing interest as regulators and brand owners seek to reduce fossil-based materials in packaging.

By expanding production capacity, Fibu aims to move its material closer to wider industrial adoption while supporting the development of renewable fiber-based materials for packaging and other applications.
