New headbox installation on the paper machine at Gruvön mill enhances strength, quality consistency, and sustainability for Billerud Flute®.
Billerud is reinforcing its premium containerboard leadership through a strategic investment at its Gruvön mill. A new headbox installation on the paper machine will lift the company's flagship Billerud Flute® to superior levels of strength, consistency and overall performance.
The upgrade targets better fiber orientation, sheet uniformity and enhanced strength properties critical advantages for converters and brands facing tougher logistics and climate demands.
"Billerud Flute is already world-class in performance and reliability," says Johan Wallin, Acting VP Business Area Paperboard. "This investment secures our lead in fresh fiber fluting, delivering tangible gains in performance and sustainability for customers."
Work is slated for April 2026, with next-generation Billerud Flute launching in the second half of the year. "It's a key move in our strategy for high-performance renewable packaging that cuts total ownership costs and environmental impact," Wallin adds.
About the Gruvön Mill
Located 30 km west of Karlstad in Värmland, Billerud’s Gruvön mill is one of the world’s leading producers of fluting, liners and liquid packaging board for high-performance packaging applications. The site also manufactures market pulp.
Gruvön supplies fresh-fiber fluting for demanding corrugated packaging, from fragile consumer goods to heavy industrial products, while its premium liners serve luxury, beauty, fashion and food segments. The mill is also a major supplier of liquid packaging board used in cartons for milk, juice, yogurt and other beverages.
The site hosts Billerud’s Box Lab and Pack Lab development centres, where experts in packaging optimization support converters and brand owners. Gruvön is also the birthplace of FibreForm®, Billerud’s formable paper innovation.
