Tony Smurfit, CEO of Smurfit Westrock, said demand improved and containerboard prices increased during Q1.

Financial News

Smurfit Westrock reported improved demand and higher containerboard pricing in the first quarter of 2026, despite weather-related disruptions. The results were released April 30, 2026.

The company posted net sales of $7.7 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $1.076 billion, with a margin of 14.0%. Net income reached $63 million.

Results were negatively impacted by approximately $65 million due to adverse weather events, primarily affecting operations in North America.

Pricing and demand trends

Containerboard pricing increased by a net $20 per ton during the quarter, with a further $30 per ton increase implemented in April.

Demand improved progressively across all paper grades in North America, while corrugated box volumes remained in line with expectations.

Smurfit Westrock added more than 600 new customers during the quarter, reflecting ongoing adjustments in its commercial strategy and product mix.

Regional performance

The EMEA and APAC business continued to grow, supported by improving demand and customer gains. Containerboard prices in the region also increased, driven by higher energy costs and stronger market conditions.

In Latin America, the company reported strong performance with adjusted EBITDA margins of around 20%, supported by its integrated regional model.

Outlook

Smurfit Westrock expects continued improvement in volumes in the second half of 2026, supported by a more favorable operating environment.

The company reaffirmed its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance in the range of $5.0 billion to $5.3 billion.
