Mondi is closing additional converting plants and reducing headcount as rising costs and volatile market conditions continue to pressure the packaging and paper sector.

In April, the group confirmed the closure of three sites, a Consumer Flexibles plant in Hungary and two Corrugated Solutions plants in Poland and Germany, bringing the total number of recently announced closures to six.

The restructuring is expected to reduce headcount by 450 positions, with production volumes transferred within Mondi’s existing network as part of efforts to optimise its industrial footprint.

The move comes amid broader cost pressures, with geopolitical tensions contributing to increased volatility in energy, raw material and logistics costs, particularly in relation to developments in the Middle East.

Across the sector, similar cost and pricing dynamics are prompting producers to tighten cost control and adjust capacity to protect margins in a lower-price environment.

Mondi said its operations continue to run safely, with limited direct exposure to affected regions, while the broader impact of cost inflation is being addressed through pricing actions and operational efficiency measures.

The measures follow a first-quarter trading update highlighting ongoing margin pressure despite higher sales volumes.

Mondi is a global packaging and paper group operating in more than 30 countries, with integrated capabilities across the value chain. The company reported revenues of €7.7 billion and underlying EBITDA of €1.0 billion in 2025.
