RISE Launches Testbed for Odor-Free Lignin

International News

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden has inaugurated a new demonstration plant for odor-free lignin at LignoCity in Bäckhammar — the world’s only open-access test facility for industrial-scale production of customized lignin grades.

The breakthrough eliminates the distinctive smell that has long limited lignin’s potential in various applications. With this innovation, RISE aims to pave the way for sustainable materials in bioplastics, adhesives, paints, and even cosmetics — key sectors in the transition to a circular bioeconomy.

“This is a game changer for the development of future lignin-based materials,” said Johanna Mossberg, Head of Bioeconomy Arena at RISE. “With the investment in odor-free lignin, we take a major step toward increasing lignin’s value as a raw material and enabling new circular innovations and business opportunities that help reduce climate impact.”

The odor-free lignin process was developed in collaboration with Valmet, which holds the patent for the technology.
