Discussions regarding the conversion of Domtar’s Gatineau mill into a containerboard production facility are progressing, marking a key milestone for the future of the local manufacturing industry.

During a press conference held on site, Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon and Unifor Quebec Director Daniel Cloutier emphasized the importance of this project in preserving over a hundred jobs and creating new opportunities.

This ambitious project aims to adapt the mill to new market realities and environmental standards. Federal government financial support, which could represent one of the largest investments in the region, is essential to ensure the long-term viability of the site.

In an uncertain economic context, the mill’s employees, represented by Unifor, are awaiting clear commitments to ensure that this transition unfolds under the best possible conditions. “This is the beginning of good news — even excellent news!” said Daniel Cloutier, highlighting that this transformative project could have a positive impact on the regional economy and the entire forestry sector in Quebec.

Domtar has committed to working with all political parties to ensure the successful completion of this project, despite uncertainties related to the economic situation and the possibility of early federal elections. Unifor stresses the importance of stable and sustainable support to guarantee the success of this industrial transformation.

The union will continue to closely monitor the situation, demanding firm commitments from both governments and the employer to ensure the sustainability of jobs in Gatineau and the prosperity of the local manufacturing industry.
