Vida AB will permanently close its sawmills in Urshult and Orrefors, southern Sweden, as ongoing fibre supply constraints continue to pressure the region’s wood products sector.

The announcement was made by Canfor Corporation, which owns a 77% stake in Vida AB.

According to Vida CEO Karl-Johan Löwenadler, the closures reflect a continued imbalance between sawmill production capacity and access to fibre in southern Sweden.

“By concentrating production in fewer more productive and efficient facilities, we will strengthen Vida’s competitiveness and better position the business for the future,” he said.

The closures will reduce Vida’s annual lumber production capacity by approximately 265,000 cubic metres.

Following the shutdowns, Vida will continue operating 13 sawmills across central and southern Sweden, along with its packaging, specialty finishing and logistics operations.

The move comes as Nordic wood producers continue to face tightening fibre availability and rising pressure on operational efficiency.

Vida AB is Sweden’s largest privately owned sawmill company. The company operates sawmills and wood processing facilities across Sweden and is active in lumber production, packaging, logistics and specialty wood processing.

Canfor is a Canadian producer of lumber, engineered wood products, pulp and paper, pellets and renewable energy products. The company operates manufacturing facilities across Canada, the United States and Europe.
