Monadnock Paper Mills has received TÜV OK Home Compost certification for its Compostable Card, a paper-based material designed to replace certain single-use plastic applications.
The certification confirms that the product can safely decompose in home composting systems. The TÜV OK Home Compost certification, widely used in Europe, confirms that the material can safely biodegrade in home composting conditions.
Developed as a durable alternative to plastic, Compostable Card is a bright white engineered paperboard made from 100% post-consumer recycled fiber and compliant with FDA food-contact requirements. The material is designed to maintain strength and humidity resistance during use while still breaking down after disposal.
According to Rajan Iyer, Vice President of Research, Development and Technical Services at Monadnock, the product addresses applications where paper must match the performance of plastic.
“Compostable Card represents a breakthrough in technical design and performance for applications where paper replaces plastic and must deliver durability and humidity resistance,” Iyer said.
The company said the material can be used in applications such as bakery bag closures, gift and loyalty cards, and durable signage.
Industry estimates suggest that billions of plastic bakery bag clips are produced each year in the United States. Replacing even a portion of these products with fiber-based alternatives could significantly reduce plastic waste.
The certification follows several recent sustainability recognitions for the company, including an EcoVadis Platinum rating for the second consecutive year and certification from the Mastercard Card Eco-Certification program for gift card products.
Monadnock Paper Mills, founded in 1819 and located in Bennington, New Hampshire, is the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States. The company specializes in premium, environmentally responsible paper and packaging solutions made with renewable energy and recycled fiber.
