Svante Technologies has acquired Calgary-based Carbon Alpha Corporation, strengthening its carbon capture and removal project development activities in Western Canada.
The transaction adds Carbon Alpha’s subsidiaries and project interests to Svante’s portfolio, including the North Star Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) Project, developed with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) in Saskatchewan. The project will integrate carbon capture at the MLTC Bioenergy Centre, a biomass cogeneration facility that produces renewable electricity and heat using forestry residues from a nearby sawmill.
Phase one of the project is expected to capture up to 140,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ per year from biomass combustion flue gas. The captured CO₂ will be transported through a dedicated pipeline and permanently stored in a deep saline aquifer southwest of Meadow Lake, generating durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits.
Svante said the acquisition strengthens its capabilities in carbon capture and storage project development while expanding its CCS activities in Western Canada. The next steps for the North Star project include a front-end engineering design (FEED) study and a test well drilling program, with a final investment decision expected in the first quarter of 2027.
Developed in partnership with MLTC, which represents nine First Nations in northwest Saskatchewan, the project aims to support regional economic development while helping scale engineered carbon removal projects.
