West Fraser has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, Building Together: People and Partnerships, underscoring the company’s continued commitment to environmental stewardship, workplace safety, community investment, and Indigenous partnerships.
The report details West Fraser’s progress across key environmental, social, and governance (ESG) pillars, with particular focus on safety, emissions reduction, and sustainable sourcing.
“Since our founding 70 years ago, West Fraser has recognized our responsibility to the environment and society while delivering solid financial performance,” said President and CEO Sean McLaren. “This report outlines the measurable progress we’ve made in 2024 toward our long-term goals.”
Key Achievements in 2024:
- Improved Safety Oversight: The company implemented new contractor safety standards and expanded data-driven safety programs. Enhancing worker safety remains a core focus in 2025.
- Carbon Reduction Milestones: West Fraser reported a 22% reduction in scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to 2019 levels, and a 13% reduction in scope 3 emissions from a 2020 baseline. All mills advanced along energy reduction roadmaps, supporting the company’s validated Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments.
- Sustainable Forest Management: A unified Sustainable Forest and Wood Procurement Policy was introduced to guide responsible sourcing and land stewardship across operations.
- Indigenous Partnerships: A landmark agreement was signed with Lake Babine Nation’s forestry company to secure long-term fibre supply for the Smithers, BC mill—pending provincial approval in 2025.
- Community Investment: West Fraser invested $4.3 million through 800 partnerships, with an emphasis on youth support, mental health initiatives, and rural development.
Operating over 50 facilities in North America and Europe, West Fraser manufactures a range of wood products for construction and industrial markets. The company’s sustainability strategy continues to integrate emissions goals, stakeholder engagement, and ecosystem protection.
