Michael Haws, CEO of Sappi North America, has been named Mainebiz 2025 Business Leader of the Year, recognized for his outstanding leadership and contributions to Maine's economy.

The award highlights Haws' focus on environmental innovation, workforce development, and strategic investment. His leadership has been pivotal in transforming Sappi North America and strengthening its community impact.

A key achievement is Project Elevate, a $400+ million investment at the Somerset Mill. This initiative converts a paper machine into a fiber-based packaging production line, offering a sustainable alternative to single-use plastics.

"Mike's leadership has been instrumental in Sappi's growth and transformation," said Patti Groh, Sappi North America's Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications.

Haws has also prioritized employee engagement, safety, and recruitment. Sappi has maintained its EcoVadis Platinum rating for five consecutive years, placing it in the top 1% globally for sustainability. He has implemented modern workforce strategies, including digital outreach and co-op programs, to build a strong talent pipeline.

"I'm honored to be named a Mainebiz 2025 Business Leader of the Year," said Haws, attributing the award to the hard work of the Sappi team.

Sappi North America, with operations in Skowhegan, Westbrook, and Portland, significantly contributes to Maine's economy. The Somerset Mill alone supports nearly 1,000 direct jobs and thousands more in the supply chain.

The company's commitment to reinvestment and partnerships, such as the Maine Forestry Program, aims to foster a sustainable future for the state.

Sappi North America, a subsidiary of Sappi Limited, is a leading producer of diversified paper, packaging products, and pulp.
