Paper Advancement

PulPac is targeting a widely used packaging segment with its Dry Molded Fiber technology. Together with Future Materials Sweden and Yoik AB, the company has developed a fiber-based snus can for the Helwit brand.

This smokeless nicotine product, commonly placed under the upper lip and widely used in Scandinavia, is still predominantly packaged in plastic.

The initiative brings fiber into a demanding application. Snus cans must meet strict dimensional requirements, ensure a precise fit, and maintain a premium feel. They are opened and closed multiple times a day. The concept has been engineered to meet these constraints while protecting the product and delivering consistent surface quality and finish.

For PulPac and Future Materials Sweden, the project marks an expansion into rigid packaging formats, where consistency at scale is critical. A newly signed license agreement allows Future Materials to industrialize and produce solutions based on PulPac’s Dry Molded Fiber technology.

The concept is currently in the validation phase. Testing includes performance evaluations as well as trials on Yoik’s filling lines. Further refinements are expected, with the objective of ensuring robustness, consistency, and readiness for industrial scale.

In parallel, the partners are preparing the next steps. Production planning and tooling optimization are underway to support a smooth transition toward large-scale manufacturing.

Initial feedback has been encouraging. According to Future Materials Sweden, discussions with industry players in Europe and the United States indicate significant volume potential. Cost considerations have been integrated from the outset, a key factor for adoption in high-volume consumer markets.

For Yoik, the project forms part of a broader innovation approach. Through its Helwit Concept initiative, the company explores new formats and challenges established standards in the smokeless nicotine category.

For PulPac, the project serves as a concrete proof point. Fiber-based materials are now being tested in rigid formats with tight dimensional tolerances. By combining materials technology, industrial expertise, and brand-driven development, the partners aim to move from concept to scalable solution.

If large-scale validation is confirmed, the fiber-based snus can could open the door to broader adoption in packaging segments still dominated by plastic.

Yoik AB is a Swedish manufacturer of tobacco-free nicotine pouches marketed under the Helwit brand. Founded in 2021, the company operates its own production facility in Småland, with a focus on quality, flavor development, and responsible manufacturing.

Future Materials Sweden is a Swedish startup focused on developing fiber-based alternatives to plastic packaging. It combines expertise in production technologies, injection molding, and tooling design to support large-scale adoption of renewable materials.

PulPac is the developer of Dry Molded Fiber, a technology designed for high-speed production of rigid fiber packaging with low resource consumption. The company deploys its patented process globally through a network of partners and licensees, with the aim of replacing single-use plastics.
