Smurfit Westrock has introduced a prototype packaging solution designed to eliminate traditional gluelines in paper-based packaging, as the company continues to expand its focus on automation, recyclability and packaging efficiency.
The new system, branded ActiBlu™, was unveiled during Smurfit Westrock’s 2026 Innovation Event in the Netherlands, which gathered more than 450 customers, partners and industry representatives.
Unlike conventional box-closing systems that rely on hot-melt glue application during packing operations, ActiBlu uses an adhesive integrated during packaging production. The seal is activated later through a fine mist of water, allowing the package to close immediately without additional glue application equipment.
According to Smurfit Westrock, the technology could simplify packing line operations while reducing adhesive consumption by up to 60% compared with traditional hot-melt systems.
“ActiBlu simplifies the packing process for our customers,” said Arco Berkenbosch, Chief Innovation Officer at Smurfit Westrock. “The transition to the solution requires a modification from glue application to spraying a fine mist of water on packing lines, reducing operational complexity while maintaining performance.”
The company said the solution could also support packaging recyclability goals and help brands adapt to evolving packaging regulations, including the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
ActiBlu is currently in the pilot phase, with testing underway in operational environments in collaboration with industry partners.
The Innovation Event also featured the launch of three AI-based tools intended to improve packaging performance throughout the supply chain using market data and predictive analysis.
“This is about building a future that balances innovation with responsibility: powered by people, guided by nature, and enhanced by AI,” Berkenbosch said.
Smurfit Westrock is a global producer of paper-based packaging solutions, operating across containerboard, corrugated packaging and consumer packaging markets. The company serves customers in multiple industrial and consumer sectors worldwide.
