Safety

At Mondi’s Dynäs mill in Sweden, safety is a core value that extends beyond policy into the very culture of the workplace.

The company has launched the ‘Dynäs No Accidents’ (DNA) programme, aiming to make safety a personal responsibility for all employees and contractors, ensuring everyone returns home safely every day.

The DNA programme focuses on fostering a culture of care, accountability, and collaboration. By connecting safety to personal values and feelings, it encourages employees to prioritize safety in their daily actions. Jessica Kärrlander, Safety, Health, and Environment Manager at Mondi Dynäs, explained, “We wanted to shift safety from being someone else’s responsibility to something that is personal and relevant to everyone.”

The programme’s key pillars include:

  • Creating a culture of openness.
  • Involving everyone in decision-making.
  • Customizing training to individual needs.
  • Sharing personal safety stories.
  • Empowering employees to take ownership of safety.

The journey to embedding safety into Dynäs' culture took several steps:

  1. Investigation: Interviews and surveys revealed that safety wasn’t seen as a personal responsibility.
  2. Workshops: Management and safety reps shaped the DNA programme and set a vision for a safer culture.
  3. Commitment: Over 100 employees and safety experts worked together to create a shared safety vision.
  4. Training: Employees were trained to lead safety seminars, encouraging personal engagement.
  5. Ongoing Learning: Seminars for new hires and workshops on diversity, inclusion, and safety ensured continuous improvement.

Through these efforts, Dynäs has created a workplace where safety is not just a policy but a shared value. Employees now feel empowered to speak up, share concerns, and take ownership of safety, turning it into a collective commitment woven into the mill’s DNA.
