Mondi has become the first company in South Africa to receive the globally recognised Cradle to Cradle Certified® certification for paper products, as its uncoated fine paper portfolio from the Merebank mill earned certification at the Bronze level.
The certified range includes office paper and uncoated fine paper reels, notably featuring Rotatrim, Mondi’s flagship multifunctional paper brand, alongside Constat, Envapost, and Script. This recognition highlights Mondi’s commitment to sustainable production and circular economy principles in the South African paper industry.
Cradle to Cradle Certified® is an internationally respected standard assessing a product’s lifecycle from material sourcing to production, ensuring alignment with circular economy goals. The certification evaluates five sustainability criteria: material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship, and social fairness.
“This important sustainability milestone reflects our ongoing efforts to deliver circular-driven solutions and contributes to the Group’s ambitious Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability commitments,” said Donovan Naidoo, Operations Director at Mondi Merebank.
The certification at Merebank follows similar achievements at Mondi’s uncoated fine paper mills in Slovakia and Austria, which were the first in Europe to receive Cradle to Cradle Certified® recognition. This latest development underscores the company’s ongoing efforts to align its operations with internationally recognised sustainability standards.
Mondi is an international packaging and paper company operating in over 30 countries with a workforce of more than 22,000 people. The company focuses on developing circular packaging solutions designed to reduce environmental impact while meeting diverse performance needs across the value chain.
