Mondi has partnered with chemical company Evonik to develop a recyclable pre-made paper bag that significantly reduces the carbon footprint of packaging for specialty chemical powders.
The new packaging solution, designed for fumed silica—a performance additive used in industrial and consumer applications—replaces the plastic-coated paper layer of the previous bag with a two-ply paper-based alternative. This innovation cuts overall material use and reduces packaging weight by 30%, while maintaining durability and protection.
The lightweight bag is made from Mondi’s high-porosity kraft paper, which offers strength and stretch while allowing for faster vacuum filling. A small spot coating enables secure sealing after filling, and the entire bag is recyclable, meeting CEPI v.3 and 4evergreen standards.
Evonik began exploring more sustainable packaging options in 2022 and worked closely with Mondi to co-develop a solution aligned with its broader sustainability goals.

Following extensive testing, the bags are now commercially available and are already being used by Evonik for filling, palletising, and distribution.
