Stora Enso and Matrix Pack have announced a strategic partnership to advance the development and industrial scaling of formed fiber packaging, aiming to offer a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic-based materials.

Building on a successful existing collaboration, this enhanced agreement combines Stora Enso’s expertise in renewable materials and innovation with Matrix Pack’s global manufacturing capabilities and extensive commercial reach. The partnership seeks to accelerate the deployment of circular, fiber-based solutions that meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging.

“This partnership is a natural step forward in our Formed Fiber journey,” said Juuso Konttinen, SVP and Head of Biomaterials Growth at Stora Enso. “We see formed fiber as a high-potential packaging segment, and partnering with Matrix Pack gives us the best opportunity to join the growth path.”

Formed fiber is seen as a promising technology to replace single-use plastics in various packaging applications. The partnership will also explore synergies in fiber sourcing and supply chain integration, leveraging the strengths of both companies across the value chain.

As part of the deal, Stora Enso has acquired a minority stake in Matrix Pack and will join its board of directors, underscoring a shared commitment to long-term collaboration.

“We are proud to welcome Stora Enso as a strategic partner and shareholder,” said Lyberis Polychronopoulos, President of the Board at Matrix Pack. “Their leadership in sustainable materials aligns perfectly with our mission. Starting today, we are significantly expanding the existing capacity, which enables us to deliver the next generation fiber-based packaging to customers worldwide.”

Matrix Pack operates eight manufacturing sites across five countries—USA, UK, Greece, Bulgaria, and Thailand—serving global brands with molded fiber packaging solutions for both wet and dry applications.

This alliance is expected to accelerate the transition toward renewable, high-performance packaging and reinforce both companies’ positions as leaders in the bioeconomy.
