September saw an improved outlook for pulp prices in the main Chinese market, with North American and Western European markets continuing to soften, as global economic fundamentals continue to weigh heavily on fibre commodity markets.

Containerboard production in August 2019 decreased 2.4 percent compared to August 2018 and was down 4.9 percent year-to-date. The average daily production compared to July 2019 was 3.2 percent higher.

Containerboard production in July 2019 decreased 7.8 percent compared to July 2018 and was down 5.3 percent year-to-date. The average daily production compared to June 2019 was 2.5 percent higher.

Containerboard production in June 2019 decreased 6.6 percent compared to June 2018 and was down 4.9 percent year-to-date. The average daily production compared to May 2019 was 0.6 percent higher.

A February 2019 report from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) resulted in several news articles and stories stating, “The Issue with Tissue.” The NRDC report focused criticism on North American bath tissue producers for the amount of virgin fiber used in their products and the impact on the environment resulting from the cutting of boreal forests for the virgin fiber supply.

The report featured revised data based on findings from the 59th Annual Capacity Survey released May 15. Containerboard production in April 2019 decreased 5.3 percent compared to April 2018 and was down 4.1 percent year-to-date.
