Metsä Board Corporation has announced a significant leadership change as Mika Joukio, the company’s long-standing CEO, will step down from his role on April 7, 2025.

He will be succeeded by Esa Kaikkonen, currently Metsä Group’s Executive Vice President of Strategy. This decision was finalized in an agreement between Joukio and the Board of Directors.

Joukio, who has been with Metsä Board for 35 years and served as CEO since 2014, will remain with the company until October 2025 to ensure a smooth transition. Under his leadership, the company made substantial investments in its Husum and Kemi mills and initiated modernization projects at Simpele paperboard mill. Ilkka Hämälä, Chair of the Board of Directors, praised Joukio for his expertise and inspiring leadership, noting that the company is well-positioned for future growth thanks to his contributions.

Esa Kaikkonen brings extensive experience to his new role, having held various leadership positions within Metsä Group over the past 27 years. His tenure includes serving as CEO of Metsä Tissue (2018–2025) and EVP of Metsä Wood (2013–2018). Kaikkonen’s deep understanding of the industry and proven track record are expected to drive continued success for Metsä Board.

Metsä Board remains committed to sustainability and innovation in the production of lightweight and high-quality folding boxboards, food service boards, and white kraftliners. The company uses renewable and recyclable fresh wood fibers sourced from Northern European forests, with a goal to achieve fossil-free mills and raw materials by 2030.

Metsä Board, a subsidiary of Metsä Group, recorded EUR 1.9 billion in sales in 2024 and employs approximately 2,300 people.
