Kiilto has expanded its portfolio of renewable packaging solutions with Kiiltomelt EVO R 20, a hot melt adhesive made from 97% bio-based raw materials.
The company says the new product delivers reliable performance across a wide range of packaging conditions, including refrigerated and frozen environments, without requiring changes to existing production lines.
The adhesive is one of the most bio-based hot melt solutions currently available. Kiilto attributes the high renewable content to both biomass-derived ingredients and the mass balance method used for part of the formulation. According to Maija Kulla-Pelonen, Product Development Manager at Kiilto, packaging companies increasingly want materials that match the sustainability profile of fibre-based packaging. “Bio-based adhesives help reduce the overall carbon footprint of packaging,” she says.
Strong adhesion on recycled cardboard
Recycled fibres now make up a growing share of cardboard packaging, but their variable structure often creates denser surfaces that are harder to bond. Kiiltomelt EVO R 20 was designed for these conditions. The fast-setting adhesive forms a strong bond on both virgin and recycled cardboard and remains compatible with standard recycling processes.
Performance in cold-chain applications
Adhesives used in food packaging must withstand temperature shifts throughout transport, storage and retail. Many hot melt adhesives lose strength at low temperatures, but Kiiltomelt EVO R 20 maintains adhesion in refrigerated and freezing environments. This makes it suitable for frozen ready meals, chilled products and other cold-chain packaging that demand stable performance.

Ready for existing production lines
Kiilto says the new adhesive works with standard nozzle and roller application systems. It has already been tested under industrial conditions, and additional pilot runs are underway at customer facilities. Beyond food packaging, the adhesive can be used in other applications that require renewable materials, high bond strength and durability across temperature variations.
Expanding a renewable adhesive portfolio
Kiiltomelt EVO R 20 joins Kiilto’s wider range of bio-based packaging adhesives, which includes Kiilto Pro Pack Eco dispersion adhesives and Kiilto Biomelt, the world’s first biodegradable hot melt adhesive. With a 97% bio-based content, the new product marks the company’s most renewable hot melt formulation to date.
Kulla-Pelonen says the goal is to reduce reliance on fossil-based resources while ensuring that renewable alternatives meet the technical demands of modern packaging. She notes that in some cases, the bio-based adhesive can outperform traditional options.
Kiilto is a Finnish family-owned company specialising in adhesives, hygiene solutions and construction materials. Founded in 1919, the company conducts research and development in bio-based and low-emission technologies with a focus on industrial applications, including packaging. Kiilto operates in several European markets and works to increase the share of renewable raw materials in its product portfolio while supporting the transition to more sustainable manufacturing processes.
