Mondi Launches High-Barrier Recyclable Paper Bag

Paper Advancement

Mondi has introduced the re/cycle PaperPlus Bag Advanced, an innovative paper bag that combines high moisture protection with significantly reduced plastic content.

The new product targets the needs of the building and construction industry, particularly for humidity-sensitive powdery products.

Developed in partnership with flooring systems manufacturer UZIN, the bag features a thin 20 µm high-performance barrier film—using up to 60% less plastic than standard 50 µm alternatives. Despite the reduced material use, it offers comparable protection, ensuring product integrity during transport and storage.

“This is a future-ready packaging solution that supports both sustainability and operational efficiency,” said Max Melzer, Head of External Sales Industrial Bags at Mondi.

The re/cycle PaperPlus Bag Advanced has undergone recyclability testing according to the CEPI test method and 4Evergreen evaluation protocol, confirming its compatibility with paper recycling streams. It also runs efficiently on existing filling and sealing lines, enabling manufacturers to adopt it without modifying their equipment.

Mondi’s in-house Product Impact Assessment (PIA) lifecycle tool confirms the bag’s lower carbon footprint, making it an attractive solution for companies seeking to meet tightening environmental regulations while maintaining technical performance.

The new product aligns with Mondi’s MAP2030 sustainability goals, which focus on circularity, climate action, and empowered people across the value chain.

The re/cycle PaperPlus Bag Advanced received a Bronze Award at the 2025 EUROSAC Grand Prix, an annual competition that highlights innovation in the paper sack industry. The recognition reinforces Mondi’s leadership in developing next-generation paper-based packaging that reduces reliance on fossil-based plastics.

“By cutting plastic and boosting recyclability, this solution embodies our commitment to sustainable innovation,” added Melzer.
