Suzano has started operations at a new fluff pulp production line at its Limeira mill in São Paulo state, significantly expanding its exposure to the absorbent products market.
The R$490 million investment (about US 90 million) increases the company’s total fluff pulp capacity by more than 400%, from 100,000 tonnes to 440,000 tonnes per year.
The project converted an existing pulp line at Limeira into a flexible production unit capable of manufacturing both Eucafluff® used in personal hygiene and absorbent products such as baby and adult diapers, sanitary pads, and pet pads and conventional market pulp supplied to tissue, printing and writing, and packaging applications. This added flexibility allows Suzano to adjust production between specialty and commodity grades in response to global market conditions.
Introduced in 2015, Eucafluff® is the world’s first fluff pulp made from eucalyptus fibre. Compared with traditional pine-based fluff pulp, it offers higher softness and flexibility, enabling thinner and more discreet absorbent products. Its high compression capability can also reduce packaging volumes, plastic film use, and transportation and storage requirements across the value chain.
According to Suzano, products made with 100% Eucafluff® demonstrate strong liquid retention and low rewet performance, contributing to improved comfort and dryness for end users. A life-cycle study completed in 2024 identified several environmental advantages over pine-based fluff pulp produced in the southeastern United States, highlighting differences in fibre sourcing, forestry practices, and logistics efficiency.
Guilherme Melhado Miranda, global director of Fluff and Fiber Solutions at Suzano said: “Over the past 10 years, Eucafluff® has grown from a groundbreaking idea into a global reality. With our expanded production capacity, we are now better positioned to meet rising demand and to support our clients globally in developing innovative and sustainable products.”
The investment also underscores the company’s focus on asset flexibility as it adapts its pulp platform to evolving market demand and the transition away from fossil-based materials.
Suzano is the world’s largest pulp producer and a major supplier of paper and packaging products in the Americas. Headquartered in Brazil, the company operates an integrated industrial and forestry platform with operations across Latin America, North America, Europe, and Asia. Suzano’s portfolio serves a wide range of end markets, including tissue and hygiene products, packaging, printing and writing papers, and bio-based materials.
