Mondi Dynäs is advancing a multi-year investment program aimed at strengthening the long-term competitiveness, energy performance and environmental profile of its kraft paper operations in Sweden.
The transformation includes the installation of a new fibre line, a continuous digester, a bark boiler and dryer, as well as a tall oil plant. Together, these upgrades are designed to improve pulp quality, enhance resource efficiency and significantly reduce fossil fuel use at the mill.
According to the company, the new bark boiler will play a key role in lowering carbon emissions, while the continuous digester will improve both energy and water management. The upgrades also support product performance: Mondi notes that the mill’s high-strength kraft paper—already recognized for its exceptional properties—has achieved further strength gains, allowing the operation to meet rising customer demand for advanced, fibre-based packaging solutions.
A major milestone was reached in May 2025 with the successful start-up of the new fibre line during the mill’s annual maintenance shutdown. The commissioning of the continuous digester marked a critical step in the project, improving process stability while reducing overall energy consumption.
Beyond process improvements, the investment is intended to secure the Dynäs site’s long-term future. Project leaders describe the modernization as a foundation for safe, efficient and sustainable operations over the coming decades, supporting Mondi’s broader growth strategy in kraft paper and sustainable packaging.
Managing the scale and complexity of the project while keeping the mill operational has been a central challenge. Construction activities temporarily increased the on-site workforce to as many as 650 people, requiring careful coordination and a strong focus on safety. Despite the complexity, the project recorded a limited number of recordable safety incidents, supported by close collaboration between site teams and safety functions.
The investment also carries regional significance. Located in Kramfors, the Dynäs mill remains a key industrial employer, and the project is expected to support job security and contribute to the long-term economic and environmental sustainability of the local community.
Mondi Dynäs is part of Mondi, a global packaging and paper group focused on renewable, fibre-based solutions.
