Sonoco Products Company has released its 2024 Corporate Sustainability Report, showcasing major strides in climate action, circular packaging, and global integration following its transformative acquisition of Eviosys, Europe’s top metal packaging manufacturer.
The report highlights how the addition of 6,300 employees and 45 facilities across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa has strengthened Sonoco’s position as a global leader in sustainable metal and fiber packaging. Rebranded as Sonoco Metal Packaging EMEA, Eviosys played a central role in accelerating Sonoco’s environmental goals.
In 2024, Eviosys achieved a 26.3% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to its 2020 baseline and earned a second consecutive EcoVadis Platinum rating, receiving top marks for environmental performance. The company also installed energy-efficient oxidizers across key sites, cutting natural gas usage by 60% and eliminating solvent emissions.
Across the broader organization, Sonoco completed 27 sustainability projects last year. These included a Virtual Purchase Power Agreement with ENGIE North America for 140 MW of wind energy and renewable energy initiatives in the U.S., U.K., Italy, and Indonesia. As a result, Sonoco reduced its energy consumption by 9.6%, surpassing its 8% target for 2030.
“Sustainability is at the core of our global transformation,” said Scott Byrne, Vice President of Global Sustainability at Sonoco. “With Eviosys, we’re expanding our reach and capabilities, enabling greater impact through innovation and action.”
Sonoco’s product innovation continues to reflect its sustainability mission. New solutions include recyclable rigid paper containers, lightweight steel aerosols, and Eviosys’ award-winning Ecopeel™ and Horizon™ products, which offer material reductions and improved recyclability. Both received accolades at the 2024 Oscar de l’Emballage Awards.
“We are committed to better packaging for a better life,” said Howard Coker, Sonoco’s President and CEO. “By investing in circularity and reducing our carbon footprint, we’re helping customers and communities transition to a more sustainable future.”
