Paper Advancement

Lecta has announced the launch of Metalvac Seal Oxygen Barrier, a new recyclable metallized paper designed for flexible food packaging requiring high barrier protection.

This latest addition to the company’s flagship Metalvac range responds to growing industry demand for sustainable, high-performance alternatives to plastic, foil, and multilayer laminate packaging.

Developed for applications such as snacks, confectionery, coffee, spices, powdered ingredients, and pet food, Metalvac Seal Oxygen Barrier delivers excellent protection against water vapor, oxygen, aroma, mineral oils (MOSH/MOAH), and grease — all while remaining PFAS-free.

The barrier paper is heat-sealable on its high-vacuum metallized backside and compatible with common printing techniques including offset, flexography, and rotogravure. With weights of 83 and 93 gsm, it performs efficiently on horizontal and vertical form-fill-seal (HFFS/VFFS) packaging machines, and is suitable for formats such as sachets, flowpacks, and doypacks.

Despite containing only 0.08 gsm of aluminum, the product offers strong barrier properties without compromising recyclability. It is certified as recyclable within the standard paper stream, according to CEPI’s recyclability test method (version 2).

Lecta highlights that the entire Metalvac range, including the new barrier grade, is produced under stringent Good Manufacturing Practices and complies with food safety standards (FSSC 22000), along with ISO certifications for environmental management, energy efficiency, quality, and worker safety. Forest certification via PEFC or FSC® is available upon request.

The launch of this new grade reflects ongoing efforts in the packaging industry to develop recyclable, fiber-based materials in response to regulatory and environmental pressures.

Lecta is a Europe-based paper manufacturer specializing in high-performance solutions for packaging, labels, commercial sheets, and specialty papers. Their Metalvac range includes metallized products designed for recyclability and food-safe barrier performance.
