RISE Research Institutes of Sweden has launched a transportable carbon capture pilot plant, designed to evaluate continuous CO2 capture from industrial flue gases.
This innovation aims to address the high energy consumption and costs associated with current commercial carbon capture systems, a major hurdle in widespread adoption of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS).
The pilot plant, housed in a 20-foot container, facilitates continuous testing at industrial sites, requiring only electrical and flue gas connections. RISE is focusing on developing energy-efficient and cost-effective technologies using eutectic solvents and ionic liquids, collaborating with academia and industry.
"This pilot offers a unique opportunity for industries to evaluate CO2 capture from their specific gas streams," stated a RISE representative. "A pilot study can provide vital information on capture performance and inform large-scale investment decisions."
The plant utilizes absorption and stripper columns, a standard process, but seeks to optimize it through the evaluation of novel absorption media. Traditional amines are being tested against newly developed eutectic mixtures, which promise improved absorption and stripping with reduced energy consumption. RISE researchers, with expertise in eutectic mixtures, have access to cutting-edge materials for these trials.
Each industrial plant's flue gas composition is unique, necessitating on-site evaluation before large-scale implementation. RISE's mobile facility allows for the determination of capture rates and purity levels. The potential to significantly impact efficiency and cost through new absorption media makes this pilot a crucial tool for data acquisition prior to major carbon capture investments.
