 BUT…. what are the best material choices?

Caustic and corrosive solutions used in processes combined with extreme temperature variations can make for a challenging operating environment.  Robust solutions are needed to keep processes running smoothly.

Stainless steel (SS) is often the “go-to” choice for durability, safety and reliability in many types of manufactured products from industrial enclosures to cookware.   But not all Stainless is the same.  What’s in the composition can dictate the life of a metal component.  


SS is not a single alloy, rather it is a group of iron-based alloys containing at least 10.5% chromium, the material used in “chrome” coatings, such as automobile bumpers.   Chromium and other elements are added during the melting of the steel to make a homogenous mixture that enhances the metal’s resistance to corrosion as well as other properties needed for different applications.  At the micro level, the chromium in the mix changes the way the iron is oxidized and the added nickel enhances this effect.  Adding molybdenum gives it an extra boost for even better corrosion resistance.

The AISI numbering system numbers types in 200, 300 and 400 series with the most common choices in industrial applications being the 300 series.


SS304 contains 18% chromium 8% nickel

Durable, resistant to oxidation & corrosion

Often used in auto molding & wheel covers, kitchen equipment, pressure vessels, piping.

SS316 16% chromium 10% nickel + 2% molybdenum for increased resistance to salt corrosion and chlorides.

SS316 is the best choice for applications where metal contamination simply cannot happen (ie. pharmaceutical manufacturing), in places with exposure to the elements (ie. outdoor equipment & enclosures) and a wide range of other applications.

It’s heat-resistance and defence against chemical attacks from chlorides, iodides and bromides make it the obvious choice for harsh industrial environments.

Corrosive attacks happen at a molecular level.  Kynar® is a resin made of polyvinylidene fluoride, commonly called PVDF.   

This material has high electrochemical stability, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance to a wide range of aggressive chemicals typically acids, solutions of salt, chlorinated hydrocarbons, alcohol and halogens.   This resistance paired with a high temperature rating make it well suited for use in a range of industrial equipment applications such as: piping, fittings, mechanical components, fabricated vessels, pumps and more.


Each application is unique.  Operating conditions and variations will dictate the best material choices for installed equipment.  It’s best to seek advice from the manufacturer as to the types of materials available for components.
