Gov. Mills says she ‘will not allow’ Skowhegan’s Sappi paper mill to close over recent dam concerns

The governor made the comments amid worry that the state would require the Shawmut Dam on the Kennebec River to be removed, which in turn would lead to the closure of the nearby Sappi Paper mill.

Gov. Janet Mills said Thursday she “will not allow” the Sappi Paper Somerset Mill in Skowhegan to close, in response to concerns being raised by the owner of a nearby dam that’s up for federal relicensing.
