Pactiv Evergreen reaches deal with union as Canton mill closure looms

Pactiv Evergreen, a packaging and paper products company, has reached a deal with the United Steelworkers union in the face of plans to shut down its Canton mill.

The deal offers some degree of relief for workers who choose to stay with the company until June 9, when job eliminations are set to begin. While Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers expressed some relief that the deal involved raises and other compromises for workers, he still saw the closing of the mill as a major loss. Governor Roy Cooper plans to visit the area to discuss the matter further.

Meanwhile, Pactiv Evergreen's Waynesville operation is still exploring strategic alternatives, although the plant is not currently listed for closure.
