Feldmuehle Shuts Uetersen Mill After 120 Years

International News

Feldmuehle GmbH has announced the end of paper production at its historic Uetersen mill, concluding more than 120 years of manufacturing activity.

Despite several years of investment in sustainability, energy efficiency and product development, the company says it can no longer operate competitively under current market and regulatory conditions.

According to the company, Feldmuehle undertook significant capital projects to modernize its operations, optimize processes, train new talent, and reduce costs in an increasingly challenging marketplace. Management had expected these efforts to support a long-term turnaround.

However, the company states that “unplanned market events,” ongoing uncertainty surrounding Germany’s industrial electricity price discussions, and “ever-increasing bureaucratic hurdles” undermined the feasibility of continued production. Feldmuehle concluded that maintaining operations at Uetersen was no longer economically viable.

Paper production at the site has now stopped. Feldmuehle will finish, sell, and ship remaining inventories in the coming weeks as it winds down operations.

The company extended its gratitude to employees who remained committed through years of restructuring and difficult decisions, highlighting their dedication and belief in the mill’s long-term potential.

With the shutdown of the Uetersen mill, a chapter spanning more than a century of papermaking in northern Germany comes to a close.

Feldmuehle is a German producer of specialty paper grades, known for coated flexible packaging papers and graphical applications. The company operated for more than 120 years at its Uetersen site, serving packaging converters and print customers across Europe.
